Applied Therapeutic Practice™
Where psychological understanding meets real life.
My working model connects what we explore in therapy with the choices, relationships and circumstances of your life.
The model at a glance
Where psychological understanding meets real life.
Applied Therapeutic Practice™ is my working model for bringing psychological understanding into real life. It connects therapeutic exploration with the relationships, routines, circumstances and choices that shape your day.
We begin with what matters to you. Talking and reflection can help us understand your experiences; trying something different in everyday life can give us new information to bring back into therapy. We agree the pace and approach together, with space to adapt.
Insight creates possibility. Living creates change.
The Three-World Model
Inner World
Your emotions, thoughts, beliefs, memories, identity and nervous system. We explore your history, how you make sense of yourself and the patterns that may have helped you cope.
Everyday Life
Your relationships, routines, work, rest, boundaries and choices. We consider where patterns show up now and what a manageable change might look like.
Wider World
Your environment, community, opportunities and access to support. We recognise that wellbeing is shaped by circumstances as well as by what happens inside you.
These worlds influence one another. A difficult environment can affect how safe you feel; a new experience or supportive connection can change what feels possible.
Five Flexible Stages
Understand
Explore what is happening, how it developed and what matters to you now.
Make it Visible
Name or map a pattern using conversation, a visual resource or a metaphor that makes sense to you.
Practise
Try a new response together, such as rehearsing a boundary, or agree a small experiment you can choose to try between sessions.
Connect
Explore the people, places, activities or services that could support you.
Build
Reflect on what you are learning and develop ways of living that fit your needs, values and circumstances.
This is not a straight line or a set programme. We may return to any stage as new experiences help us understand something differently.
What This Means for You
You do not need to arrive with the right words or a plan. We work together to understand what you need and choose approaches that fit you. Depending on your goals, this may involve:
Therapeutic exploration of your experiences, relationships, emotions and coping patterns.
Psychoeducation: accessible explanations of how emotions, stress and the nervous system work.
Personalised resources, such as a visual map, metaphor or reflection tool.
Practising conversations or boundaries together before you decide whether to try them outside therapy.
Behavioural experiments: agreed, manageable ways to test a belief or try a different response.
Practical support and signposting, including exploring community activities or social prescribing routes where appropriate.
Reflection on real-life outcomes: what happened, how it felt and what we can learn from it.
For example, we might explore why saying no feels difficult, map the pattern, rehearse words that feel like yours, and reflect on a conversation you choose to have. Your experience guides what we do next.
Clear Therapeutic Boundaries
Applied Therapeutic Practice™ is my working model within therapy. It is not life coaching or case management, and it is not a separate qualification or a promise of a particular outcome.
Practical work stays connected to your therapeutic goals and within my professional role. We may explore support options or routes to community services, including social prescribing where appropriate. I do not take over your decisions, manage your affairs or coordinate ongoing care on your behalf. Where another service or specialist is needed, we discuss appropriate signposting.
We agree any practice or experiment together. You can decline, pause or change an approach. There is no requirement to complete tasks between sessions, and we make room for the realities and limits of your circumstances.
The aim is to help you understand yourself and have more choice in how you live.
